Key Stage 3 Music - Pop Music

Lesson 4

Lesson Objectives

  • Develop our understanding of "Pop Music" characteristics through practical tasks
  • Continue to develop our performance/keyboard skills through playing well known pop riffs

Starter - Listening Tasks

Listen to the following videos and decide what part of the song is catchy.

Example 1

Example 2

Riff = made from a series of notes, chord pattern or musical phrase that gets repeated

Hook = catchy vocal/lyrical phrase that summarises what the song is about.

Can you think of any current pop songs that have a catchy "hook" or "riff"?

Practical Task

In pairs, begin to learn well known pop riffs on the keyboard. Begin with "Smoke on the water". Once you have completed that one and can play it confidently and in time, move on to another - it's up to you which one you play!

Use your Initiative

Watch the video to understand how pop music in the 21st Century is using what is known as the "Millennial Whoop". Discuss this with your teacher next lesson to earn a commendation for "demonstrating initiative".
