Lesson 1
Lesson Objectives
- Develop our understanding of genres of pop music.
- Develop our knowledge of chords through practical tasks.
What does the word "Genre" mean?
Using the whiteboards, write down as many genres of music that you can think of (aim for 1950's – today).
Be prepared to share your answers with the class.
Chords - What are they again?
2 or more notes played at the same time
You have previously used chords in Blues Music (year 7). These chords were MAJOR chords
In Pop Music, both MAJOR and MINOR chords are used....
The easiest way to identify a chord when listening is that MAJOR sounds happy, where as MINOR sounds sad and moody.

TASK - Class Rehearsal/Performance
In pairs, learn the following chords:

Make sure you can both play them, using the correct hand position. Once you have got it, practice the following:

As a class, play these chords along to this track.
EXTENSION - push your music making skills!
If you can play these chords already, have a go at one of the following...
- Adding a bass line with your left hand. To do this, play the first note of each chord in time with your right hand (e.g. the note A with your left hand as you play Am chord with your right hand).
- Sing and play at the same time
- Change the figuration of the chords by inverting them (ask your teacher if you need help with this!)
- Add rhythm to your chords (ta-ta-ta-ta for example)
Your teacher will film today's class performance with the class Ipad so make sure you are rehearsed and ready to perform!
