Key Stage 3 Music - Folk Music

Lesson 3

Lesson Objectives

  • Understand how musical devices (e.g. call and response) are used in Sea Shanties/Folk Music.
  • Learn how to apply these musical devices through ensemble singing "Hullabaloo Balay" and "Haul Away Joe".

Starter

In pairs/groups, discuss as many features of folk music that you can think of.

Haul Away Joe

  • What time signature is this song in?
  • What is the song about?
  • This song uses call and response. How is this different to call and copy?

As a class, you are going to learn two Sea Shanties that use call and response throughout.

Haul Away Joe Lyrics

When I was a little lad or so my mammy told me,

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

That if I didn't kiss the girls, me lips would grow all mouldy,

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

Chorus:

Away, hey! haul away, we'll haul away together

Away haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!

Away, hey! Haul away we'll hope for better weather

Away haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!

For once i had an Irish girl but she got fat and lazy,

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

For now I got an Cornish girl, and she can drive me crazy,

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

King Louis was the king of France before the revolution,

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

And then he got his head cut off, it spoiled his constitution,

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

A hey can't you see the black clouds arising

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

A hey can't you see the storm clouds are gathering

Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe

Class Performance

Your teacher will film you singing either "Haul away Joe" or "Hullabaloo Balay" so that you can hear your class perform as an ensemble.

When you watch it back, think about the following things...

  • Were we in time?
  • Did we all sing in tune or create the correct shape of the melody?
  • Did we use any musical devices? What impact did it have?
  • Were we expressive enough?
  • What could we do to improve it? (Make suggestions to your teacher)

If there is time, your teacher will film you singing your chosen class song again. Make sure you think about what was discussed and aim to add those improvements in this next performance.

Hullabaloo Balay Lyrics

Me father kept a boarding house

Hullabaloo Balay! Hullabaloo balahbalay!

Me father kept a boarding house

Hullabaloo balay!

The boarding house was on the quay

Hullabaloo Balay! Hullabaloo balahbalay!

But lodgers were nearly all at sea

Hullabaloo Balay!

A flash young fellow called Shallow Brown,

Hullabaloo Balay! Hullabaloo balahbalay!

He followed me mother all round the town

Hullabaloo Balay!

Me father said "young man me boy",

Hullabaloo Balay! Hullabaloo balahbalay!

To which he quickly made reply,

Hullabaloo Balay!

Next day while Dad was in the "Crown"

Hullabaloo Balay! Hullabaloo balahbalay!

Me mother ran off with Shallow Brown.

Hullabaloo Balay!

Me father slowly pined away,

Hullabaloo Balay! Hullabaloo balahbalay!

'Cause mother came back on the following day.

Hullabaloo Balay!
