Lesson Objectives

  • Learn how to create and compose an African drumming piece using simple notation and several musical elements.

Task 1

Warm up by singing Babethandaza as a class.

You will be using musical devices that are stylistic of African drumming, including call and copy, call and response, polyrhythms, syncopation and changes in texture.

Do you understand what these key words mean? Discuss or demonstrate your understanding in your pairs. Be prepared to share with the class.


Task 2

Continue to plan your group drumming composition and develop the piece for a performance.

Remember, it must include the following musical elements for it to be successful:


SUCCESS CRITERIA

  • A steady beat.
  • Good timing (all parts in time to together, following the beat
  • A clear structure (beginning, middle and end or ABA)
  • Polyrhythms (including a syncopated rhythm).
  • Call and copy.
  • Call and response (with the response being clearly improvised and in time).
  • Dynamics (loud and quiet sections to make it exciting).
  • Solo sections.
  • Optional - vocals from the song Babethandaza

Task 3 & Homestudy

Your teacher will aim to film all groups as a piece in progress.
