Areas of Key Revision

If you revise the topics listed below then you will choose the grade you achieve. If you do not revise when you have been given specific topics then you are choosing to fail.

The topics below do not include the information that will be required to answer the multiple choice element of the paper.

  • Photovoltaic cells and their application.
  • Line bender (Strip Wire Heater) and their uses.
  • Uses for a Diode.
  • Uses for a Solenoid and their operation.
  • Be aware of different types of prototyping board like strip board (veroboard) and bread board. Include advantages and disadvantages over other methods.
  • Understand the multiples and sub-multiples associated with resistance, capacitance and amperage.
  • Advantages of using PCB software to design PCB's rather than drawing by hand.
  • Be able to describe the photo etching process to make PCB's.
  • Why do Transistors require a resistor on their Base.
  • The use of Specifications when designing a product. (Question 12)
  • Different sizes of batteries, including watch batteries, and how some are more suited for certain applications than others.
  • The environmental benefits of being able to disassemble products at the end of their life.
  • Relative advantages and disadvantages of LCD and LED dot matrix displays.
  • Be able to define 'internet marketing' and its advantages and disadvantages for a company.
  • Logic Gates and their functions.
  • The function and use of a 555 timer circuit as a 'monostable'.
