Areas of Key Revision

The maths exam contains a mixture of all topics you have covered so far in maths; it is a review of the whole course content, not just what you have covered so far this year.

Ratio and Proportion

  • solve problems involving unequal sharing and grouping using knowledge of fractions and multiples
  • use ratio notation, including reduction to simplest form

    • Algebra

  • understand and use the concepts and vocabulary of expressions, equations, formulae and terms
  • use and interpret algebraic notation, including: ab in place of a × b, 3y in place of y + y + y and 3 × y, a² in place of a × a, a³ in place of a × a × a, a/b in place of a ÷ b, brackets
  • simplify and manipulate algebraic expressions by simplifying, expanding brackets and factorising

    • Calculating

  • understand and use place value
  • use conventional notation for priority of operations, including brackets, powers, roots and reciprocals (BIDMAS/BODMAS)
  • recognise and use relationships between operations, including inverse operations (e.g. cancellation to simplify calculations and expressions)

    • Number

  • Understand that fractions, decimals and percentages are different ways of representing the same proportion
  • Be able to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages and apply them to appropriate calculations.

    • Geometry

  • use standard units of measure and related concepts (length, area, volume/capacity, mass, time, money, etc.
  • know and apply formulae to calculate areas and perimeters of 2D shapes including circles
  • know and apply formulae to calculate volume and surface area of 3D shapes
  • plot, recognise, sketch and interpret graphs of linear functions

    Revision tools available to you consist of the following:

    MyMaths Booster packs:

    • When you log onto myMaths select the 'Booster Packs' tab,
    • Then select the appropriate level booster packs from the tabs at the top of the page.
    • Then select a topic, use the Lesson to help you and work through the Online Homework.

    Past papers on myHighcliffe:

    • When you go to the maths classroom, select the KS3 tab and you will see a list of past papers. Some in pdf form that you can print out and a number of interactive versions you can work directly on screen.

    With your revision you should first work on the topics that you struggle with most, you should be aware of these from any previous assessments you have done and feedback from home study. Although it is important for you to feel confident in all topics you have covered in maths so far, to help guide your revision here are some key mathematical topic areas which will help with future progression in your mathematics.
