Task 1b – Multi-Track Recording

This assignment is broken in to 2 elements; Recording and Mixing. 

All students should aim to complete the recording element by the end of the Autumn Term. Successful capture is fairly straightforward but mixing requires a greater degree of research and trailing.

Key Points

  • The piece should be from AoS 2 – Popular Music since 1910.
  • 2 to 4 minutes long. 
  • 8 tracks minimum.
  • 4 tracks minimum captured by mic.
  • Use overdub techniques.
  • Live musicians only, no sequencing.
  • 20 hours work time.

Approach

  • Identify suitable bands or musicians, repertoire and skill.
  • Standard band line-up is straightforward.
  • Make recording plan, mic choice and placement.
  • Guide track – vox and harmony INCLUDING COUNT-IN AND INTRO.
  • Bass and drums (take photos for log).
  • Guitar/harmony.
  • Main vocal.
  • Solo’s/ additional tracks.
  • Review tracks then leave well alone for a few days.
  • Mix and burn to CD for playing on a range of equipment (complete log).
