Structure your Composition

Style

Base your composition on a particular style of music.

Use these examples showing different styles of drum patterns – set them at the correct TEMPO.

If appropriate to your chosen style use AUDIO SAMPLES to add vocals or other effects.

This guide will help you with importing and how to create a rhythmic effect from audio.

4 Bar Units

Keep everything in 4 bar units:

Build the TEXTURE by adding a new layer every 4 bars.

Texture

Drum Fills

Repeat your drum pattern for 4 bars before changing to a new pattern. Change the 4th bar into a DRUM FILL.

Keep your INTRO, VERSE, CHORUS and BRIDGE sections in multiples of 4 bars.

Large Sections

Create excitement and CONTRAST by changing the TEXTURE in each section.

Build up layers in the INTRO (red section) and when building up to the main CHORUS section (yellow) and strip layers out for the BREAKDOWN (green section) to create contrast.

Repeat some sections so that there is a balance between REPETITION and CONTRAST (e.g. the yellow CHORUS section). You can add some small variations 2nd time round to make it more interesting.

Create a section that is completely different from the rest of the piece as a MIDDLE 8 or BRIDGE section (purple) and repeat a previous section as an OUTRO to create a balance between REPETITION and CONTRAST
