There are three types of machine embroidery that you should learn as basic techniques:
It is really useful to be able to draw with a sewing machine - maybe to outline something you have painted, or to outline shapes as part of quilting/applique.
This is another very useful technique that can be used to really good effect. A word of warning though; this technique can be over-used because it gives fast results. Think carefully about how you will use it and what other techniques you will combine it with.
Couching is a fun way of getting thicker lines onto your work. Another way to do this is to wind thicker thread onto the bobbin and work from the underside. Double, and even triple needles can give some wonderful effects with contrasting threads.
All of the above techniques can be used in conjunction with many other techniques.
