You are going to use Adobe Photoshop to work on the images that you are going to put onto your poster. It is a very powerful programme and we will only be scratching the surface of what it can do. Even in the limited time that we have you will be able to do some really eye-catching things with the images that you change in Photoshop. Why don't you start using Photoshop to manipulate images when you are doing work for other subjects?
Open, Crop, JPEG, PSD, History Window
1. In 'My Documents', create a folder called 'Photoshop Work'.
1. Open files by either pasting a picture in or by opening a file that is saved.
2. Crop different files - look for interesting shapes/areas to crop to, then save the results as JPEG's.
Tips There are instructions on how to do all these things - look on the right for the 'Photoshop Basics' link.
Below you will find the different files and information that you might need for Lesson 8.
Go through your book, look at each page and ask yourself whether you can do anything to improve the look of the page - can you add some colour maybe? Or some little pictures? Is there a lot of space on the page that you could put some extra annotation in or fill in a creative way that fits with your theme?
LOOK at the display on the back wall showing the different graphics logos in orange/black. See if you can remember how to describe some of the images.
Adjustment Layer, Gradient Map, Hue/Saturation, Filter Gallery, Posterize, History, Invert, Layers
Using some of the images that you saved last time.
1. Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer on an image.
2. On a different image create a Posterize adjustment layer.
3. On another image create a Gradient Map adjustment layer.
4. Lastly on another image create an Invert adjustment layer.
5. Make sure that you save each one of these as a JPEG. Name it after the adjustment layer that you have done.
Using some of the images that you saved last time, but NOT the ones with the adjustment layers on.
1. Try out some of the different filters.
2. Save the changed images that you think are the best ones that you have done as JPEGs.
Tips: There are instructions on how to do all these things - look on the right for the 'Filters and Adjustments' link.
Below you will find the different files and information that you might need for Lesson 9.
Try out some more of the Filters and Adjustment Layers (you may need to collect some more images to do this).
Try doing more than one adjustment layer on your photo.
Layers, Order, Layer visibility, Hue/Saturation, Adjustment layer, Clipping mask
1. Look at the layers window at the side of the 'Make the Bed'.
2. Drag the layers up and down to put them in the right order so that you can make the bed properly.
Tip: If you find it hard to position the layers exactly on top of each other with your mouse, use the up/down and left/right arrows to move them.
1. Click on the teddy bear layer.
2. Now add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and move the Hue pointer up and down.
3. What happens to all the layers?
4. Click on the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and then go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask.
5. What happens to all the layers now? What about the teddy bear?
Tip: If you create an adjustment layer, it will change all the other layers underneath it. A Clipping Mask cuts the adjustment layer to the exact shape of the layer below it to so that it only affects that layer and not all the others underneath. A Clipping Mask will cut any layer to the shape of the one below it.
1. Change the duvet to pink/green/yellow. ONLY the duvet.
2. Change the bed sheet to pink.
3. Tuck in the duvet. Create a clipping mask to cut the duvet to the shape of the sheet.
Below you will find the different files and information that you might need for Lesson 10.
Open the 'Bake the Cake' file and see if you can put the layers of the cake in the right order.
If you finish this, then see if you can make more candles by going to Layer > Duplicate Layer when you have one of the candle layers selected.
Try clicking on one of the layers and then in the layers window, find the Opacity slider at the top and slide it from left to right. What happens to the layer?
See if you can find the following things in Photoshop:
Selection, Magnetic Lasso Tool, Magic Wand Tool, Polygonal Lasso Tool, Layer
1. Open the sunflower in Photoshop
2. Use the Magic Wand Tool to make a selection around the sunflower. It is easier to select the black background and then to invert the selection so that the sunflower is selected.
3. Make a layer from the selection.
4. Open the field, and drag the sunflower onto it. Drag some more onto it and resize them.
1. Open the daisy, open the Magnetic Lasso Tool to make a selection around the daisy and then make a layer and drag daisies onto the field.
2. Now open the poppy and try to make a selection around it using the Polygonal Lasso Tool, and drag some poppies onto the field.
3. Open the pansy and try using the Polygonal Lasso Tool to select the pansy. Do this roughly and drag onto the field, then rub out the rough bits with the rubber tool.
4. See if you can put a cow onto the field.
Below you will find the different files and information that you might need for Lesson 11.
Try cutting out the pansy roughly again with the Polygonal Lasso Tool, but this time see if you can use additive and subtractive selections to make the final selection more accurate.
Look at the layers on your field. See if you can move the layer order around by dragging the layers up and down the layers window.
See if you can add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to some of your flowers.
1. See if you can find the following things in Photoshop: Rubber, Magnetic Lasso Tool, Polygonal Lasso Tool, Magic Wand Tool, History Window, Layers Window
2. Open the picture below called 'Selections' in Photoshop.
Selection Magnetic, Lasso Tool, Magic Wand Tool, Polygonal Lasso Tool, Layer
Using the picture of Mr Powell
1. Crop the picture and then use the Magic Selection Tool to select his head and make a layer from it.
2. Now In History go back to the cropped head and use the Magic Selection Tool to select the background around his head, inverse the selection and make a layer from the head.
3. Go back in History and now try out the Magnetic Lasso Tool to select the head and make a layer.
4. Go back in History and do this again but this time with the Polygonal Lasso Tool.
5. Go back in History, do step 4 again but this time cut it out roughly. Now delete the background layer and use the rubber to rub out the bits you missed.
6. Add adjustment layers to this to change the colour slightly.
Use the picture of Mr Powell and the picture of Gru to put Mr Powell's head onto Gru.
Now use pictures of your choice to swap a head onto a different body.
Below you will find the different files and information that you might need for this lesson.
