Photoshop and Illustrator

You will be using two programmes to make your CD cover: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. You will do most of your design work in Illustrator but you will need to know how to use Photoshop to manipulate images ready for copying over in Illustrator and to put onto the back of your CD cover.


Lesson 3: Photoshop

To Start

  • Log onto a computer
  • Look for Adobe Photoshop in Programmes
  • Open it

Why do we use large images from the internet to work on in Photoshop?



Tasks

Individual Task 1

  1. Collect a LARGE image from Google Images of your chosen artist - make sure that it has mostly head and shoulder is and not a whole person. 
  2. Save this image. 
  3. Go to File>Open in Photoshop and open your picture.  

Individual Task 2

  1. Crop the picture so that it shows mainly head and shoulders.  
  2. Open the History Window. (Go to Windows>History).
  3. Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation 
  4. Move the Hue arrow around to change the colour of your picture.
  5. Click 'OK' and save your picture as a JPEG calling it Hue-Saturation 
  6. On your History Window, click back to 'Crop' so that you can do another adjustment.
  7. Now do 'Posterize' and 'Gradient Map'. 

Individual Task 3

  1. Take your picture back to 'Crop' on the History Window.
  2. Go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic
  3. Choose 'Cutout' and move the arrows on the right around until you think your picture looks 'cool'.
  4. Save this as a JPEG called 'Cutout'. 

Individual Task 4

Open the file (under 'Information') called Adjust/Filter and read the instructions on the file to insert your pictures on the page and write instructions on how you did your adjustments/filters. 

Tips: Remember that the History Window is one of the most useful tools in Photoshop.

Lesson 4: Introduction to Illustrator

To Start

Join the dots and fill in the squares of the sheet that you have been given.

Lesson Objectives 

  • To be able to set up a new page in Illustrator
  • To be able to draw and fill in shapes in Illustrator
  • To be able to explain what a bitmap is
  • To be able to describe the difference between a vector and a bitmap

Tasks

Individual Task One

  1. Open Illustrator
  2. Go to: File>New, then choose Print Document in the window that opens
  3. Another window will open - choose an A4 size
  4. Make the orientation landscape

Tips Sometimes the type of document window comes up when you open Illustrator, in which case choose print document and then the size and orientation in the next window.

Individual Task Two

  1. Hover your cursor over the tools to see what they are.
  2. Label the Illustrator Tools sheet with the names of the different tools.

Individual Task Three

Once you have done all the investigations below, create a text box and write out how you have made shapes, filled them with colour and changed the stroke colour and width.



Investigate

Investigation One

Use the Pen Tool and play on Illustrator to work out how to do the following:

  • Draw a shape using straight lines
  • Fill the shape with a colour
  • Draw a shape with curved lines
  • Fill the shape with colour
  • Draw a shape which has curved and straight lines
  • Fill the shape with colour.

Investigation Two

Now do the following with your shapes:

  • Change their colour
  • Change the stroke colour and thickness
  • Make sure that each shape has a different colour and stroke colour

Investigation Three

On the same page, create a straight edged shape.

  • Use the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow)
  • Click on one of the anchor points on the shape
  • Use the tools at the top to change the lines to curved
  • Do the same with the other anchor points
  • Now see if you can fill the shape with a gradient fill.
  • Make another one and see if you can fill it with a pattern fill.

If you finish

Draw something in Illustrator made up of different shapes.


Lesson 5: Layers

To Start

  1. Open the file called Bedframe'
  2. Go to Window > Layers and open the Layers Window. YOU CAN PRESS F7 TO DO THIS.
  3. Now see if you can move all the bits of the bedframe together to make a bed frame.
  4. Answer the first four questions on the sheet that has been given to you. (You can do this with a friend if you like).

Question of the Lesson - Why are layers so useful in Illustrator?



Tasks  

Individual Task One

  1. With the Make the Bed file open, in Illustrator, go to Windows>Layers OR press F7.
  2. Now click and drag the layers into the right order in the Layers Window. The bed frame should be at the bottom, then the mattress, then the sheet etc.
  3. Now on the page, use the Selection Tool and select the different parts of the bed and make the bed in the right order.
  4. Answer the rest of the questions on the sheet.

If You Need Help

  1. Open the PowerPoint file called 'How to Make the Bed'.
  2. Go to 'Slideshow' and 'From Beginning'.
  3. Look at the slideshow, remember that you will need to click on the arrow of many of the short filmstrips that are in the PowerPoint.

Individual Task Three

  1. Open the file called 'Bake the Cake'.
  2. Now see if you can re-order the layers and 'bake the cake'.

If you finish

  1. Open a new A4 landscape page in Illustrator.
  2. Use the pen tool and shape tool to draw your own picture.
  3. If you can't think of anything to draw, try a beach hut.
  4. Make sure that you have the Layers Window open so that you can get the parts of your picture in the right order.
