Year 8 Graphics - Research

Research

Before you begin to design your poster you need to find out information in order to make sure that your poster will appeal to the people that will like the theme park attraction you have chosen to advertise.

All good designers do a LOT of research before they design so that they are really familiar with the product they are advertising and the tastes of the people that are likely to want to buy the product. This is NOT just something that we make you do in school.

Research is REALLY Important !

Lesson 1: Introduction

To Start

  • Watch the 'preview' video to get an idea of what we are doing in Year 8 Graphics
  • As a class: go through the Task Frame to find out more about the project.

Lesson Objectives

  • To understand the task ahead
  • Create a really thorough mind map on 'theme park'.
  • Draw your chosen attraction and annotate it.

Key Words:

Advertising, publicity, theme park, attraction, research, poster, mind map.

Question of the Lesson - What exactly are we doing in Graphics over the next seven weeks?

Tasks

In a group:

1. Choose a spokesperson in your group.

2. List all the attractions that you can think of (it might be helpful to think about theme parks that you have been to). Food outlets can be counted as attractions.

3. Now write on the list all the words that come to mind when thinking about a theme park and its attractions. Write down feelings (e.g. scary) as well as other descriptive words.

As a class:

1. Feedback from groups - attractions and name suggestions will be written on the board.

Individual task:

1. Now make your own mind map on 'theme park'.  Consider lots of describing words (scary, fun etc) as well as things like colours. Highlight the most important words.

2. Draw your attraction that you are going to make your poster for. Make your drawing large and annotate it.

Tips:

Make your pages look ATTRACTIVE, you will be marked on this. You can use different pens and colours to do this. Be CREATIVE and IMAGINATIVE. Use Visu-words to help you with your mind map.

Lesson 2: Analysing Existing Products

To Start

1. LOG in to a computer and LOOK at the poster gallery on the FLE.

2. Write down in rough 3 IDEAS from the posters to feed back to the class.

Lesson Objectives

  • To be able to explain why designers analyse other people's designs.
  • To evaluate a chosen poster and state which aspects of the poster you think will influence your ideas.

Key Words

Research, good points, product analysis, bad points, evaluate ideas, assess, improve, appraise, consider

Question of the Lesson - Why is it important to analyse designs done by other people?

Tasks

Individual task:

1. Look for examples of posters that you feel are advertising a similar attraction to the one that you have chosen.

2. Copy and paste the pictures into Word.

3. Make most of the pictures small but choose one to evaluate and make this bigger.

4. Use the evaluation helpsheet to evaluate your chosen poster. You can do this on a computer or by hand, but try to make the layout really attractive.

5. Make sure that you say in your evaluation what ideas you have discovered that you think will influence your design.

6. Print this off, cut out the pictures and text and stick these into your book ATTRACTIVELY. (See right for some exemplars).

Tips

Jot some of the attraction names in your book - put them in between the pictures for later reference.

Look at the posters in the gallery. Google one if you like it!

If You Finish

Choose another poster to evaluate.

Home Study 1

This needs to be completed by next double lesson. You will find this on the Homework page. (Look at the links at the top when you hover on 'Theme Park').

Lesson 3: Target Market

To Start

1. In your group: Look at the poster examples that you have been given and discuss which target market (type of people) you think each poster appeals to.

2. Class feedback on this.

Lesson Objectives

  • To be able to explain what a target market is.
  • To be able to describe why it is important to know about the target market before you design your poster.
  • To grasp why your poster should be aimed at your target market and identify feature that should be in your poster.

Key Words

Target market, preferences, target user, customer feedback

Question of the Lesson - Why is it essential to know as much as possible about the target customer?

Tasks

Individual task one:

1. Identify the target market for your chosen attraction. The target market is the group of customers that you are aiming your product and poster at.

2. Mind map in your sketch book a typical person in that target market. Think about their likes and dislikes, their hobbies and interests, their music and clothes tastes, where they shop, and anything else that you think may be relevant.

Individual task two:

1. Look at the mind map that you did in lesson one. Think about the impression you want to give of your attraction - will it be fun, scary, thrilling...etc?

2. Now start thinking about a name for your attraction. Jot names in your book. See if you can make the way you write each name reflect the name. (Look at the examples)

3. Get some feedback from friends to help you decide on a name. Ask a couple of friends to write comments in your book.

Tips

Keep making your book look fantastic. Use different pens to mind map. Have fun writing the names out in different ways!

If You Finish

Look at the information on 'Straplines' and see if you can come up with some strapline suggestions for use on your poster.
