By now you should have drawn over the Cutout of your artist. You are now at the point of adding all the other things that one would normally find on a CD cover. It is important at this stage to refer back to your Mind Map, your CD Evaluation and your Design Specification to discover what else needs to be done to your design in order to finish and perfect it.

Lesson 11: Logo and Title Design

To Start

  • Do an image search on Google on 'CD Covers'
  • Look particularly at the lettering on the covers - size, placement, colour, contrast and whether it fits with the rest of the cover.

Tasks

Individual Task One

  1. Open the Title Design Sheet
  2. Open the 'Title Design - How To PDF
  3. Think of a Title for your CD cover
  4. Try some of the different ways of making decorative lettering in the instruction file.

Individual Task Two

  1. LOOK at the exemplar picture
  2. Lay out attractively all the titles that you have done and label them with the way that you did them.
  3. Print off and get feedback.

If You Finish

Copy and paste the best logo onto the front of your CD cover. Now change the colours/size as appropriate to the design.

Lesson 12: The Back

To Start

  • Log onto a computer If you haven't done so already then copy and paste your chosen title to the front of your design.
  • Change colours, size and position until you are happy that the title looks good.

  • To design our back cover building on information already gathered.
  • To choose suitable fonts to match our chosen genre of music.
  • To create a text box and paste into Illustrator from Word.

Question of the Lesson - What is the meaning of the word 'contrast'?



Tasks

Individual Task One

  1. Look back at your mind map, CD evaluation and Genres and Fonts work.
  2. Insert a text box on the back of your CD cover design and make a list of all the other things that you need to put onto your CD cover.
  3. You will delete this box later on.

Individual Task Two

  1. Using the rectangle tool make a background for your CD cover.
  2. Fill this in a suitable colour and move it behind the other layers on the layers window.

Individual Task Three

  1. Copy and paste your song titles in from Microsoft word, there are two ways of doing this:
    1. You can put a text box onto the back of your CD cover and paste in the titles all in one go
    2. You can paste each title separately.  Simply highlight and copy the title in Word, then using the Text Tool in Illustrator click where you want the words to go and paste them (Ctr+v)

Tips: It is often better to paste the titles separately because you can then move them around and resize them separately.

Individual Task Four

  1. Google 'CD back covers'  and have a look at some images of CD covers to get ideas on how to place the song titles on your design. Note the size of the writing in relation to the CD cover size.
  2. Colour and move your song titles on the back of your design, remembering to leave some space for images.

If You Finish 

  1. LOOK at your mood board to remind yourself of the features of Pop Art.
  2. Collect some images that you think will go well on the back of your CD cover design.
  3. Put them into Photoshop and use adjustments/filters to change them ready to put onto the back cover.

Lesson 13: Back Images

To Start 

LOOK at your mood board to remind yourself of the main features of Pop Art.

Lesson Objectives

  • To select suitable images for the back of the CD cover.
  • To manipulate these images in Photoshop with adjustments and filters to fit into a pop art theme.
  • To decide on suitable size and placement of these image on the back cover.

Question of the Lesson - How can you make your images fit in with a Pop Art theme?



Tasks

Individual Task One 

  • Look at the gallery of back covers from the previous lesson and the exemplars on display in class.
  • Go to Google Images and collect LARGE images suitable for the back of your CD cover. 
  • Tip: Your image can match the title of your CD, or some of the song titles. You could also consider using more images of the artist or even the same original image of the artist that you used on the front.  

Individual Task Two

  • Use Photoshop Adjustments and Filters on the images that you have collected.
  • Place the image(s) onto the back of your CD cover design.
  • Change the size and position of both your song titles and the images until you are happy with what you have done.

Lesson 14: Everything Else

To Start

Refer back to your list of what should be on your CD cover.

Lesson Objectives

To place all the other key elements of the CD cover on to your design
To ensure that these are of a suitable size

Individual Task One

  • On Google Images look for things like bar codes for the back of your CD cover.
  • These can be copied and pasted onto your design.
  • Resize them and place them in the most suitable position on your design.
