Where does it come from?

  • - Evolved out of Rock 'n' Roll
  • - Guitar became the most important instrument
  • - Rock band was originally made up of a lead electric guitar, rhythm electric guitar, lead singer, bass guitar and drummer
  • - As rock developed, more instruments were added (e.g. synthesizers)
  • - Used a lot of effects on the electric guitar to produce new sounds (e.g. distortion, feedback and reverb/echo)

Musical features of Rock Anthems

- Instruments include electric guitar (lead and rhythm), bass guitar, lead singer, drum kit, and sometimes piano/keyboard/synthesizers.

- Developments in technology meant that rock bands could be amplified more

- Electric guitar solo's and riffs

- Easy chord patterns, with the guitar sometimes playing "power chords" (which is made up of the tonic and the fifth)

- Effects on the electric guitar (distortion, feedback and reverb/echo)

- Because of the powerful nature of the music and lyrics, a lot or rock songs can be described as anthems.

- Memorable, singable (or shoutable) choruses that are often repeated = the audience can join in!
