Introduce project, explain intentions and expectations. Give out task frame and clarify terminology and the implications of it. Throughout this unit there is a strong focus on drawing and students will explore their personal identity as a starting point. Students create images that reflect their ideas of themselves, working from observation and imagination. Students learn about the ideas, methods and approaches used by other artists who have made images of themselves and/or portrayed others, and will produce various portrait studies and a final piece reflecting their view of themselves.
Students should note and discuss ideas to help develop brainstorm and understand what they are used for. Make sure we discuss interlinking thoughts and feed creativity and imagination to develop ideas. Consider using images, sketching as well as text.
Create a Brainstorm which details as many different representations of students self image and identity as possible.
Review brainstorms completed, discuss and evaluate outcomes. Look at artist portraits that show very different interpretations of self. Analyse and annotate the techniques and effects within the work and ask students explain their views. Make sure we discuss how features can be simplified, exaggerated, drawn in detail, shaded, marks can be left to show how the artist has changed or developed their work.

Students to swap work with their neighbour, carefully write on the back of the work one thing they think is good about the drawing and one target to improve. Students to transfer info onto task frame and to then respond to targets. Suggest techniques for presentation and set task of filling an A4 page with drawings. Assess Level achieved.

Analyse and discuss Picasso's portrait 'The Weeping Woman' (or other artist portrait showing emotional expression). Analyse and annotate the techniques, effects and meaning within the work and ask students explain their views. Make sure we discuss the context of the painting and how features can be simplified, exaggerated to convey meaning and the artists personal expression.
Students should develop their own work in response to the artist image which could include distorting features and exaggerating colour.

Look at the work produced and compare to artists images - discuss and evaluate similarities/differences in marks and image and how the emotion or mood has been reflected. Students should use task frame to evaluate their work and consider how they can adapt and refine their work.
